Ab dem 15. Dezember 2024 greifen auf den Malediven drastische neue Vorschriften: E-Zigaretten, Vaping-Produkte und verwandte Geräte werden vollständig verboten. Weder Nutzung, Verkauf, Besitz noch Werbung sind erlaubt. Währenddessen bleibt das Rauchen herkömmlicher Zigaretten, das nachweislich weitaus schädlicher ist, weiterhin gestattet.

Die maledivischen Behörden begründen das Verbot mit dem Schutz der öffentlichen Gesundheit und erhalten dabei Unterstützung von der Weltgesundheitsorganisation (WHO). Dass die WHO ein Verbot für die deutlich weniger schädlichen Alternativen zum Rauchen unterstützt, während tödliche Tabakprodukte erlaubt bleiben, wirkt doch mehr als fragwürdig. Es drängt sich der Gedanke auf, welche Interessen hier tatsächlich geschützt werden – die öffentliche Gesundheit oder die Profite der Tabakindustrie?

Unser Kommentar: Zynisch und kurzsichtig

Es ist mehr als zynisch, den Konsum von E-Zigaretten, die als Mittel zur Rauchentwöhnung dienen können, zu verbieten und gleichzeitig das Rauchen als akzeptable Alternative zu präsentieren. Ein solcher Ansatz ist nicht nur unlogisch, sondern stellt auch einen Schlag ins Gesicht für alle dar, die bewusst auf weniger schädliche Alternativen umsteigen wollen.

Eine weitere Feriendestination für Vaper gestrichen

Mit diesem Verbot reiht sich eine weitere Feriendestination in die Liste der Länder ein, die Vaper ausschliessen. Für Dampfer bleibt nur eine Konsequenz: Das Land meiden und das Urlaubsgeld in einem Land ausgeben, das Fortschritt und Freiheit unterstützt.

Die Malediven verlieren mit dieser Entscheidung sicherlich eine wachsende Zielgruppe von Urlaubern, die umweltbewusst und gesundheitsorientiert leben. Wer nicht auf sein Dampferlebnis verzichten möchte, sollte sich andere Reiseziele suchen – Destinationen, die sowohl Wissenschaft als auch Vernunft wertschätzen.
